Why songs are spiritual

Why songs are spiritual

How God saved my life with a song.

I will define music as a set of words or instruments or both, put together melodiously to make sense.

Throughout history, music has been one of the ways man expresses his feeling and belief. Music as a combination of melodious words has been used by man as a tool of worship.

Exodus 15:1 AMP “Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to the Lord, singing, “I will sing to the Lord, for He has triumphed gloriously; The horse and its rider He has thrown into the sea.”

Everyone who has the ability to hear, has experienced the beauty of music, whether by singing or by listening to songs. When a child is crying, the mother sings, the child becomes calm and even starts to smile. That is how powerful music is to the mind. It has the power to change how we feel.

Sometimes we listen to some certain music in other to achieve a certain mood. Which is a proof that music can change how a person feels.

But this article will try to look at the spiritual side of music.

St Augustine said “he that sings well, prays twice”.

What this means is that, given the same words, singing to God is twice as powerful as just saying the words to God when we pray.

By personal experience, I know that singing connects one faster to the spiritual realm. When I’m singing, my spirit is lifted and my mind is more focused than when I am talking. This could be because one requires more concentration to sing than to talk.

But apart from the melodious part of music, what is even more important is the lyrics – content of the music.

Melody is to lyrics, what cartridge is to bullet. It is a vessel or platter that enhance delivery. Music is like a service tray.

The Bible says that God dwells in the praises of his people. His praise is usually served with the use of melody.

Psalm 22:3 KJV “But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.”

Just as God enjoys praises, the devil craves for it too. When we sing, we either attract the Holy Spirit or demons. This explains why some certain music influences certain behaviors.

For instance, when you find yourself alone with an opposite sex, you will hardly end up in fornication if a Christian worship song is playing. You often find yourself putting off the music if your carnality is so strong. Also, when you find yourself with an opposite sex, a worldly music will quickly propel you to commit the sin of fornication.

Some of the prevailing spirits in secular music are; spirit of seduction, pride, fame, glamour, jealousy etc. This explains why theses secular artists enjoy going naked on their videos. It is the spirit of seduction. They crave for fame because of the demon in charge of fame. They are usually proud too.

Singing is one act that is common to every religion and belief on earth. Just as people sing in the churches to stair up the atmosphere and invite the Holy Spirit,  it is the same way people sing in the shrine to stair up the atmosphere and invite demons.

For instance, the Olokun worshipers always sing during their idol worship. Singing is a powerful connection between humans and spirits. Even witch doctors sometimes sing during incantations.

In modern societies, music is one of the greatest tools in the hands of the devil. People are spiritually anointed and financially supported to spread the activities of Satan around the word. People hear music in parties and feel like having sex, taking drugs or engaging in any activity that is contrary to the word of God.

What you think or do while listening to music, tells a lot about the spirit behind the music. There is actually no neutral music. Every music is inspired by a spirit. If a music does not reverence God, it  reverences Satan. We like to shy away from reality by deceiving ourselves that we are too educated to believe these things.

It is very simple. Play any of Don Moen’s songs in a night club and watch how everyone will become restless and demoralized suddenly. It is the demons in charge of that environment that is uncomfortable. The same thing will happen if you play any worldly music in church. The Holy Spirit will not be comfortable in such atmosphere created by such songs. So whichever type of song you are comfortable with, tells the spirit at work in you.

This means that music is a doorway to the heart of men. Whether you know it or not, when you sing a song inspired by demons, they will enter you without further permission.

Music is a spiritual gateway between the physical and the spiritual realms. If this is true, it means we must take music very seriously. We cannot afford to sing without being sure of which gate we are opening with our songs.

Part of verse one of Kanye West’s music “Eyes closed” says

“I sold my soul to the devil that’s a crappy deal
Least it came with a few toys like a happy meal
This game you could never win…”

While he did not state how his soul was sold, it is in the public domain that secular music artists get their music anointed by demonic altars. They exchange their souls for fame and sometimes they are given lyrics to add to their song. Some say words that have no language meaning and that becomes the hit slang of the song. These are words I say demons.

A popular Nigerian secular artist did a song in 2014 titled “Story”. In that song, “Jesus” was mentioned about eight times. The song was loved by many people. But when the video came out, Jesus was never mentioned. The song became a hit. If you do not know why he dropped the name “Jesus” from that song, you are naïve.

In 2016, a popular gospel artist in Nigeria, Frank Edwards posted on his Instagram handle that he was advised to drop the name “Jesus” from his songs if he wants to have a “face”.

I have always marvel at the power of music since I was a child. I realize that I love music deeply and even though I am not very good in the performance of music, I discovered that I could use songs to my advantage in spiritual warfare.

The bible tells us about how Paul and Silas sang in jail and what happened afterwards.

Acts of the Apostles 16:25‭-‬26 “Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening. Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off!”

Some time in 2003, I became very ill. I went to the hospital several times but to no avail. The sickness got so bad that I became afraid that I may die. My condition got so deteriorated that I began to consider dying as the best solution. It was this encounter that gave me an understanding to why sometimes we hear doctors say “he gave up the ghost” or you hear a soldier tell a wounded colleague –  “please stay with us, help is on the way”.

I used to wonder why they sound as if the person has a choice. In my personal experience, the only thing left was my decision to die. I was contemplating taken the decision to die and that would have released my spirit. But in the process of contemplating, I heard a voice clearly, it said “sing praises to God”. I was too weak to sing, so I managed to speak to my three brothers who were with me that day. I asked them to please sing praises. As they raised the first song, I joined them to sing. That was how I stood up from where I was dying and started dancing. Just like that!

Few years ago, I was going through some challenges and was really disturbed in my spirit. I could not function well in the office and my level of anxiety went up. Then I had a dream. In that dream, a mad man walked passed me and said, “the Lord wants you to praise him”. I woke up from that dream and was surprised. I understood the part of praise but I did not understand why God showed me a mad man. But I know now.

Our God is great!

About two days later, I went to visit my pastor in his office. As I sat at the waiting corner for my turn, a lady came and joined me. When my pastor was done with the person he was with in his office, he walked towards us to say hello. He shook the lady that was seated and immediately, she fell under the anointing. Of course, there was nothing strange about that. But she started to prophesy and she said to my pastor, “tell my son to praise me”. Why she was prophesying,  my pastor was still holding her hand from the handshake. The thought never crossed my mind that she was referring to me until I went inside to talk to my pastor. He asked if I heard what the lady said, I said yes. He told me I was the one God was referring to. That was when I remembered the revelation I few nights back.

In 2020 I had a revelation where God gave me the song Ebezina, by Preye. When I woke up, I googled the lyrics and meditated on it.  Immediately, I knew something was about to happen. That song was a consolation song and at that time, all was well, as far as I knew. I told my brother that something was brewing. Not long after that, I got a devastating news from the doctor. It was my meditation on that song that helped me to build the required faith to go through that challenge.

In 2021, I went to the hospital for a check up and the result was not encouraging. I felt so bad that morning. As I entered my car, I stayed at the parking lot for some time. Then the Holy Spirit led me to my phone. I opened Google and I saw a song by Ada Ehi, titled Cheta. When I was done listening to that song, I started begging God to forgive my unbelief. My faith became so strong and I drove to work happily.

This is to mention a few from my many encounters as regards to the spiritual side of music.

Christian who still engage in worldly or secular music with the “woke” mindset, do not understand why they are struggling to live holy life. You can never become a diligent and dedicated Christian if you keep listening to worldly music.

If you are in doubt about what you just read, that is fine. Get to know God personally to the extent of having a conversational relationship with Jesus. The Holy Spirit will teach you all things and you will have a personal encounter.
